Best Books for SSC CGL 2026: Subject-Wise Tier 1 & 2

Updated: July 2026 · By Ash K.

A focused, subject-wise SSC CGL booklist for Tier 1 and Tier 2. One concept book plus one practice book per section is enough.

8-10 Core books4 Sections₹3,500-5,000 Budget
The short answer

For SSC CGL you need 4 core books costing ₹1,650: Rakesh Yadav 7300+ for quant, RS Aggarwal for reasoning, SP Bakshi for English, and Lucent GK. Everything beyond these four is optional practice material.

SSC CGL has four sections: Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, English, and General Awareness. You need one main book and one practice book per section, not a shelf full.

For SSC, less is more. Finish a tight booklist in four to five months, then spend the rest on previous year papers and full mocks.

That single discipline, sticking to a few books and revising, puts you ahead of most aspirants who keep buying new material.

🗓️Buy in this order, not all at once

1
Month 1: quant + reasoning only₹1,000Rakesh Yadav 7300+ and RS Aggarwal Reasoning. These two sections decide half of Tier 1, so nothing else is worth buying yet.
2
Month 2: add English + GK₹650SP Bakshi for grammar and Lucent for static GK. Start Lucent early because GK rewards slow daily reading, not cramming.
3
Month 3 onward: papers and mocks, mostly freeTen years of official PYQs and full mocks on a TCS-style interface. Buy an extra book only if mock analysis shows a specific gap.

⚖️One or the other: honest verdicts

Rakesh Yadav 7300+ vs RS Aggarwal (Quant)

RS Aggarwal
You are starting from a weak base. Concepts are explained before questions, and it builds arithmetic slowly.
Rakesh Yadav 7300+
Your basics are fine and you want exam-level practice. Chapter-wise real SSC questions at real difficulty.

Verdict: Buy one, not both. Two quant books is the most common wasted ₹700 in SSC prep, and for most CGL aspirants Rakesh Yadav is the better single pick.

RS Aggarwal vs BS Sijwali (Reasoning)

RS Aggarwal Reasoning
You want maximum volume and every classic question type in one place. The safe, complete choice.
BS & Indu Sijwali
You have seen recent papers and want newer-pattern puzzles and seating arrangements at current difficulty.

Verdict: RS Aggarwal first for a full pass, Sijwali only if reasoning is your scoring section and you finish early. One is enough for Tier 1.

🛒Buying tips

·Buy print for the main concept books you revise often: Rakesh Yadav, Lucent, SP Bakshi, Norman Lewis.
·Use free PDFs for previous year papers, NCERTs, and monthly current affairs.
·A complete SSC CGL bookshelf for 2026 costs about ₹3,000, and the must-have core alone is ₹1,650. Anything beyond that is hoarding, not preparation.
