Best Books for UPSC 2026: Subject-Wise Prelims & Mains
Updated: June 2026 · By Ash K.
A neutral, subject-wise UPSC booklist. Start with NCERTs, then move to standard books. We explain what each book covers and where it fits.
There are more UPSC booklists online than questions UPSC has ever asked. The honest truth is you need about 12 to 15 core books, not fifty.
This list is neutral. We do not sell a test series, so there is no hidden agenda to push you toward paid material.
The rule every topper repeats: read NCERTs first to build the base, then one standard book per subject, and revise each two to three times. Depth beats breadth.
🧭Reading order at a glance
⚖️Polity books
Polity is the most scoring GS subject in Prelims, with 15 to 18 questions, most of them factual.
NCERT Political Science (Class 9-12)
Builds the base on the Constitution and political system before you touch Laxmikanth. Skipping this makes the standard book confusing.
Indian Polity
The single most recommended UPSC book. Covers around 80% of Prelims and GS-2 polity questions. Read it three to four times.
Introduction to the Constitution of India
Deeper and more legal than Laxmikanth. Best as a supplement for the Political Science optional, not a starting point for beginners.
📜History books
History spans ancient, medieval, modern, and art and culture. Modern history and culture carry the most Prelims weight.
NCERT History (Class 6-12)
Ancient to modern foundation. The Class 11 and 12 books are especially important for modern history.
A Brief History of Modern India
The standard for modern history and the freedom struggle. Spectrum plus NCERT is sufficient for Prelims.
Indian Art and Culture
The universally used reference for the art and culture portion of both Prelims and Mains.
🌍Geography books
Geography covers physical, Indian, and world geography. Always read it with an atlas open.
NCERT Geography (Class 6-12)
Physical and Indian geography base. Build conceptual clarity here before the standard text.
Certificate Physical and Human Geography
The standard physical geography reference for UPSC. Clear and exam-oriented.
Oxford Student Atlas for India
Essential for map practice. Locate every physical feature as you read about it, ten minutes daily.
💰Economy books
Economy matters for Prelims and GS-3 Mains. NCERT builds basics, the standard book adds applied depth.
NCERT Indian Economic Development (Class 11)
Builds core economic concepts before the heavier standard text.
Indian Economy
The most common choice, bulky but complete. Sanjiv Verma is a leaner alternative if you find it heavy.
🌱Environment books
Environment has gained importance in recent Prelims. One book covers most of it.
Environment
The single most-read Prelims-specific environment book. Pair it with the ecology chapters of NCERT Class 12 Biology.
🧭Ethics (GS-4) books
Ethics is a Mains-only paper (GS-4). A reference book plus case study practice is the formula.
Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude
A widely used GS-4 reference. Subba Rao's Ethics is a common alternative. Practice three case studies a week alongside.
