Posts and eligibility overview: Office Assistant (Multipurpose/Clerk) — Graduates aged 18–28 years, with proficiency in the local language of the state. Officer Scale-I (Assistant Manager/PO) — Graduates aged 18–30 years. Officer Scale-II — Graduates with 2 years banking experience, aged up to 32 years. Officer Scale-III — Graduates with 5 years banking experience, aged up to 40 years. All candidates must have basic computer knowledge. Local language proficiency is mandatory — check the specific RRB's state requirement.
What makes IBPS RRB different from IBPS PO/Clerk? IBPS RRB recruits for Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) — government-owned rural development banks co-sponsored by the central government, state governments, and NABARD. RRBs operate under the RBI framework. The salary is lower than PSU banks (SBI, PNB etc.) but the competition is significantly less intense. Posting is typically local/state-level, which suits candidates wanting to serve in their home state. No interview for Office Assistant; interview is required for Officers.
Exam pattern — Officer Scale-I Prelims: 80 questions, 80 marks, 45 minutes. Sections: Reasoning (40 Qs) and Quantitative Aptitude (40 Qs). Qualifying in nature — Mains marks decide merit. Office Assistant Prelims: 80 questions, 80 marks, 45 minutes. Sections: Reasoning (40 Qs) and Numerical Ability (40 Qs). Negative marking: 0.25 marks per wrong answer in Prelims.
Start preparation now: With the notification 1–2 months away and Prelims in November–December, candidates have 5–6 months to prepare. Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, English/Hindi Language, General Awareness (Banking), and Computer Knowledge are the core subjects. Candidates often simultaneously prepare for IBPS PO and IBPS RRB PO since syllabus overlap is high. See our SBI PO exam guide for overlapping preparation strategy, or check the RBI Grade B guide for a premium banking career route.
