Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana 2026 — Complete Guide, Benefits & How It Works
India's flagship campaign to save the girl child, promote her education, and improve the sex ratio — launched 22 Jan 2015 from Panipat, Haryana
📖What is Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana 2026 — Complete Guide, Benefits & How It Works?
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) — "Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter" — is the Government of India's flagship campaign launched on 22 January 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Panipat, Haryana. It is not a direct cash-transfer scheme — it is an awareness and convergence framework implemented jointly by three ministries: the Ministry of Women and Child Development (nodal), the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Ministry of Education.
The scheme addresses the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) by combining strict enforcement of the PCPNDT Act, 1994, with community awareness drives and education-focused initiatives for the girl child. After completing its first decade in January 2025, BBBP now covers all 640 districts of India following its expansion under Mission Shakti.
Because BBBP itself does not transfer money to families, its real-world benefits reach the girl child through linked schemes — most notably the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) with the highest interest rate among small savings (currently 8.2% per annum), the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), and state-level cash schemes like Ladli Lakshmi (MP) and Bhagya Lakshmi (Karnataka).

🎯The Three Pillars of BBBP
BBBP operates on a three-pillar framework that addresses the lifecycle of the girl child — from before birth through education and into adulthood:
1. Prevention of gender-biased sex-selective elimination — through strict enforcement of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994, which prohibits sex-determination tests during pregnancy. Awareness drives target medical professionals and the public to end sex-selective abortions.
2. Survival and protection of the girl child — through institutional deliveries, immunisation, nutrition support via Anganwadi Centres, and registration of births. The scheme aims to keep institutional deliveries at 95% or above.
3. Education and participation of the girl child — through enrolment in schools, retention through secondary school, scholarships under linked schemes, and skill training for adolescent girls. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of girls at secondary level has improved from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 79.4% in 2021-22.

📈BBBP's Measurable Impact (2015–2025)
After completing a decade, BBBP's results — based on official data from the Health Management Information System (HMIS) of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the Ministry of Women and Child Development — are as follows:
| Indicator | 2014-15 | Latest |
|---|---|---|
| Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) | 918 girls per 1,000 boys | 929 (FY 2024-25) |
| Girls' GER — Secondary level | 75.51% | 79.4% (2021-22) |
| Districts covered | 100 (Phase I) | All 640 districts |
| Sukanya Samriddhi accounts | Launched 2015 | ~4.1 crore (Nov 2024) |
Sources: PIB Press Releases (Jan 2025, May 2025), Economic Survey 2023-24, Rajya Sabha replies by the Minister of Women and Child Development. The 11-point SRB improvement is the headline result of the campaign.

🔗Key Schemes Linked to BBBP
Since BBBP itself does not provide direct cash benefits to families, the real financial support reaches the girl child through these linked central schemes:
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) — the flagship savings scheme launched alongside BBBP. Parents can open an account for a girl child under age 10. Current interest rate: 8.2% per annum — the highest among all small-savings schemes. Account matures at 21 years, partial withdrawal allowed at 18 for higher education or marriage. Triple tax-free under Section 80C (E-E-E status).
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) — ₹5,000 in two instalments to pregnant and lactating mothers for their first living child. From PMMVY 2.0, an additional ₹6,000 is given for the second child if she is a girl — promoting positive attitudes towards the girl child.
Pre-Matric & Post-Matric Scholarships — SC/ST girls in classes 9-10 receive pre-matric scholarships, and those in higher classes receive post-matric scholarships. Apply on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in.
State Cash Schemes — different states run their own girl-child cash schemes: Ladli Lakshmi Yojana (MP, up to ₹1.18 lakh), Bhagya Lakshmi (Karnataka, up to ₹1 lakh), Kanyashree Prakalpa (West Bengal, ₹25,000), Kanya Sumangala (UP, ₹25,000), Apni Beti Apna Dhan (Haryana). State eligibility rules apply.
BBBP-Linked Schemes — What You Actually Get
BBBP-Linked Schemes — What You Actually Get
BBBP itself is a campaign — there is no individual cash benefit. The actual money reaches the girl child through Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana. Open a Sukanya account at any post office or authorised bank (SBI, ICICI, Axis, HDFC etc.) before your daughter turns 10. Minimum deposit: ₹250/year. Maximum: ₹1.5 lakh/year. At 8.2% interest, a ₹50,000/year deposit for 15 years can grow to over ₹23 lakh by maturity (age 21).
⚖️PCPNDT Act — The Legal Backbone of BBBP
The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994 (amended 2003) is the legal foundation BBBP relies on to address sex-selective abortion. The Act prohibits the misuse of ultrasound and other diagnostic techniques to determine the sex of the foetus.
What is illegal under PCPNDT:
Conducting any test (ultrasound, amniocentesis etc.) for the purpose of sex determination of the foetus; advertising such services; selling ultrasound machines to unregistered clinics; failing to register a diagnostic centre with the appropriate authority.
Penalties for the first offence: Imprisonment up to 3 years and fine up to ₹10,000 for both the medical professional and the person seeking sex determination. For repeat offences: imprisonment up to 5 years and fine up to ₹50,000. The doctor's registration is suspended for the duration of the trial and cancelled permanently on conviction.
Under BBBP, district-level PCPNDT enforcement cells conduct decoy operations, audit Form-F submissions from ultrasound clinics, and prosecute violations. Citizens can report suspected violations on the PCPNDT helpline or to the district Chief Medical Officer.

📌How BBBP Benefits Reach You — The Practical Route
Since you cannot directly apply for BBBP, here is the practical pathway to access its benefits:
If you have a newborn daughter (0-10 years): Open a Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana account at your nearest post office or authorised bank. You need her birth certificate, your Aadhaar, and an initial deposit of just ₹250. Account stays active till age 21.
If you are pregnant or recently delivered: Apply for PMMVY benefits at your nearest Anganwadi Centre or through the PMMVY portal. ₹5,000 for the first child, plus an additional ₹6,000 if the second child is a girl.
If your daughter is in school (Class 1-12): Apply for pre-matric or post-matric scholarships at scholarships.gov.in. SC/ST and minority girls get higher scholarship amounts. Most state cash schemes are linked through ration cards or family ID systems.
If your daughter is 15-25 and needs skill training: Enrol in Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) centres for free skill courses with stipend support — many courses specifically target girls and women.

There is no application fee for BBBP. There are no "BBBP registration agents." If anyone asks for money to enrol you in BBBP or to open a Sukanya Samriddhi account, it is a scam. All linked services are free at the post office, Anganwadi Centre, government school, or official portal.
