💼What Does an MTS Employee Actually Do?

The 'Multi Tasking' in MTS means you perform various support tasks in a government office. Daily work typically includes:

Physical record management — carrying files between sections, arranging and maintaining old records in record rooms, binding and labeling files.

Office maintenance — general cleanliness of the office section, arranging furniture, managing stationery supplies, operating photocopier/printer.

Support duties — serving water/tea during meetings, carrying messages between officers, managing the dispatch section, answering basic phone calls.

Some MTS posts in specific departments have different duties: CBIC Havaldar involves manning entry gates, checking passes, and security-related tasks. MTS in post offices may involve mail sorting and delivery assistance.

Important reality check: MTS is the lowest rung in central government hierarchy. The work is manual/physical in nature. However, it comes with permanent government job security, all benefits, and the opportunity to appear for departmental exams (like LDC exam) to get promoted to higher clerical posts. Many MTS employees have moved to LDC and UDC positions within 3-5 years through departmental promotions.

🏃PET (Physical Efficiency Test)

After clearing the CBT, candidates must pass a Physical Efficiency Test. This is qualifying — not merit-based. You just need to complete the tasks within the given time:

Males: Walk 1.6 km in 15 minutes, Cycle 8 km in 25 minutes.

Females: Walk 1 km in 20 minutes, Cycle 3 km in 25 minutes.

PwBD candidates are exempted from PET.

These are very basic physical fitness requirements — not athletic standards. Most young, reasonably fit candidates clear this easily. Practice by walking/cycling regularly in the weeks before PET. Wear comfortable shoes and sports clothing on PET day.

📚Preparation Strategy

1.The entire exam is at 10th class difficulty level. Revise your Class 9-10 Math (percentage, ratio, average, profit-loss, geometry basics), Science (physics, chemistry, biology basics), and Social Studies (history, geography, civics).
2.For General English, focus on basic grammar — tenses, articles, prepositions, one-word substitutions, synonyms/antonyms, and sentence correction. Read 10th class English textbook if your English is weak.
3.Previous year papers are the BEST resource for SSC MTS. The patterns repeat heavily. Solve 20+ previous year papers and you'll see 40-50% similar questions in the actual exam.
4.General Awareness covers static GK (capitals, currencies, important days, first in India, Indian history basics) + last 6 months current affairs. One monthly current affairs magazine is sufficient.
5.Time management is easier in MTS than CGL/CHSL — you have 54 seconds per question (vs 36 seconds in CGL). Use this advantage. Don't rush — focus on accuracy since the negative marking penalty (25%) is significant.
