๐Ÿ“Œ Two Things That Decide Your Ration in 2026 (Verified August 2026)

Free grain under PMGKAY runs till 31 December 2028. NFSA cardholders pay nothing: PHH gets 5 kg per person per month, AAY gets 35 kg per family.

But e-KYC is now mandatory for every member listed on the card, not just the head. Deadlines are set state by state, and members who miss it get their grain paused until it is done.

๐ŸชชWhat a Ration Card Actually Gets You Now

A ration card is issued by your state food department and entitles your family to foodgrain from a Fair Price Shop under the National Food Security Act. NFSA covers about 75% of rural and 50% of urban India, roughly 81 crore people.

The old picture of paying โ‚น2 per kg for wheat and โ‚น3 for rice is out of date. Since January 2024 the Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana has made NFSA grain free, and the Cabinet has extended that till December 2028.

The card does more than food. It is accepted as address proof, it is the only document listing every family member with relationships, and it feeds eligibility for PM-JAY, PM Awas, RTE school quota and many state schemes.

Applications are free in most states. What costs people their entitlement is not the fee, it is unfinished e-KYC and outdated member lists.

Ration Card e-KYC: The Task You Cannot Skip

1
๐Ÿช
At the Fair Price Shop
Take Aadhaar for every member to your ration shop. Each person gives a fingerprint on the dealer's ePoS machine, free of charge.
2
๐Ÿ“ฑ
From home by face scan
The Mera eKYC app allows face authentication without visiting the shop. Useful for elderly or bedridden members who cannot travel.
3
๐Ÿ’ป
On your state PDS portal
Several states allow OTP-based e-KYC on their own food department portal. Check what your state offers before travelling anywhere.
4
โœ…
Confirm the status changed
After completion, the member should stop showing as unauthenticated on the portal. Ask the dealer to show the updated status on screen.

๐Ÿ•e-KYC Deadlines and What Happens If You Miss

There is no single national deadline. Each state runs its own verification drive with its own cutoff, which is why WhatsApp forwards about dates are usually wrong for your state.

Assam's food department set 31 July 2026 for its drive, Maharashtra worked to 30 June 2026, and several large states ran deadlines earlier in the year. The only date that matters is your state's, available at your ration shop or on your state food portal.

Missing it does not usually cancel the card. What happens is the unverified member is flagged unauthenticated and their share of grain is paused until e-KYC is done.

The purpose of the drive is removing duplicate and ghost names so genuine families get their full quota. Completing it late still restores the member, so a missed deadline is a delay, not a permanent loss.

How to Check Ration Card Status Online

1
Open nfsa.gov.in
The national portal carries links for all states. Look for Ration Cards, then Ration Card Details on State Portals.
2
Select state and district
Choosing your state redirects you to that state's food department system, since the underlying data sits with the state.
3
Search by card number or Aadhaar
Enter the ration card number if you have it. If not, any family member's Aadhaar works, because all cards are Aadhaar-seeded.
4
Read what the record shows
You get the member list, category, monthly entitlement, assigned Fair Price Shop, and recent transactions. Check that every member appears and shows verified.

๐ŸงญWhy e-KYC Suddenly Became Everyone's Problem

Ration lists were built over decades and carry names that no longer belong there: people who died, daughters who married into other families, workers who moved and got a second card elsewhere.

Aadhaar-based e-KYC is the government's method for cleaning that up, because a fingerprint or face scan proves a real person is behind each name. Every deletion frees grain for genuine households.

The catch for honest families is that the burden falls on them too. A member who never visits the shop, like a student living in another city or an elderly parent, is exactly the profile that gets flagged.

That is why the check is worth doing proactively rather than discovering the problem when the month's grain comes up short.

๐ŸŽจCard Colours Change by State, Entitlement Does Not

People often ask which colour card is best, but colour coding is a state convention rather than a national rule. Yellow, pink, saffron, blue and white mean different things in different states.

What actually decides your grain is the category recorded in the system: AAY, PHH, or non-NFSA. Read the category printed on the card rather than judging by colour.

AAY cards cannot be applied for directly. Government identifies AAY households through survey data, and families are moved into that category by the food department.

Some states add their own extras on top of the central entitlement, such as additional free rice or subsidised pulses. Those extras stop at the state border, which matters when you use ONORC.

If you believe your household qualifies for a better category, the route is a category change application at the block food office with income and asset proof. Approval depends on the state's current NFSA quota, so it can take a while.

๐Ÿ“How to Apply for a New Ration Card

Applications run through your state's food portal: fcs.up.gov.in for UP, epds.bihar.gov.in for Bihar, mahafood.gov.in for Maharashtra, food.rajasthan.gov.in for Rajasthan, tnpds.gov.in for Tamil Nadu, nfs.delhi.gov.in for Delhi.

Fill the head of family details and then every member with name, age, relationship and Aadhaar. Attach address proof, an income declaration where the state asks for it, and a passport photo of the head.

Offline works identically: the Block or Taluka food office accepts the printed form with photocopies attached. A food inspector then verifies your residence and family composition.

Processing typically runs 15 to 30 days, with some states slower. You get a reference number for tracking, and the card is issued digitally in states that have moved to e-ration cards.

Documents Checklist

You qualify if
  • Aadhaar of every family member to be listed
  • Address proof: electricity bill, rent agreement, gas bill, or voter ID
  • Income declaration or certificate where your state requires it
  • Passport photo of the head of family
  • Bank passbook copy in states that ask for it
You won't qualify if
  • A family already holding a ration card in any other state
  • Members already listed on a different family's card
  • Households above the state's NFSA income or asset criteria
  • Applications where member names do not match Aadhaar spelling

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ From Application to First Collection

DAY 0
Apply online or at the block office
Submit the family details with Aadhaar for every member and address proof. Note the reference number for tracking.
WEEK 1-2

Most states issue within 15 to 30 days, increasingly as a digital e-ration card downloadable from the portal or DigiLocker.
BEFORE FIRST COLLECTION
Complete e-KYC for all members
Fingerprint at the shop or face scan on the Mera eKYC app. Grain does not flow for members who stay unauthenticated.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งAdding, Removing and Correcting Members

Add a member through the state portal's Add Member option with their Aadhaar, date of birth and relationship. For a newborn, the birth certificate works and Aadhaar can be linked later.

Remove a member on death, marriage into another family, or permanent migration, attaching the death certificate or marriage proof. Leaving a departed member on the card is treated as a false claim during verification drives.

For PHH cards the grain is per person, so both actions change your monthly quantity. Adding a newborn adds 5 kg a month once approved.

Corrections to name spelling, age or Aadhaar number matter more than they look. A name that does not match Aadhaar is the single most common cause of biometric failure at the shop.

Family splits after partition are handled through a card split application at the block office, needing separate residence proof and consent from the existing head.

After any change, re-check the record a week later rather than assuming approval went through. Portals sometimes show the application as complete while the member list stays unchanged.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Common Problems and What Fixes Them

Card cancelledLong non-collection, duplicate found, or verification failureAsk the food office for the reason in writing, then apply for restoration with proof
Dealer demands moneyIllegal: PMGKAY grain is free for NFSA cardholdersCall 1967 or your state helpline, and file on nfsa.gov.in grievance

๐Ÿ‘†When the Machine Refuses Your Fingerprint

Biometric failure is common among farm and construction workers whose fingerprints wear down, and among the elderly. It is not a reason to be sent home empty-handed.

Ask the dealer to try iris scanning or face authentication, both supported on current ePoS devices. Most refusals are dealers avoiding the extra step, not a system limitation.

The other frequent cause is a spelling mismatch between the card and Aadhaar, which blocks matching regardless of how clean the fingerprint is. Correct it on the state portal with the Aadhaar copy attached.

If a shop repeatedly turns you away, note the date and dealer name, then call 1967. Denial of entitlement to an authenticated cardholder is exactly what the helpline exists for.

๐Ÿ“ฑMera Ration 2.0: The App Worth Installing

Mera Ration 2.0 is the government's own app for cardholders, available on Play Store and App Store. It shows your digital ration card, member list, monthly entitlement and collection history.

For migrants it is the practical tool: it locates nearby Fair Price Shops in whichever city you are in and confirms your ONORC eligibility before you walk there.

Several states now let you download the e-ration card from the app or DigiLocker, with the printed card being phased out. The digital card with QR code is accepted at the shop.

The related Mera eKYC app handles face-based verification from home, which is the easiest route for members who cannot reach the shop.

๐ŸššONORC: Using Your Card in Another State

One Nation One Ration Card lets you collect your entitlement at any Fair Price Shop in India using your existing home-state card. A Bihar family working in Mumbai draws its grain at a Mumbai shop.

The mechanism is Aadhaar biometric authentication on the shop's ePoS device, which checks your entitlement against the central database in seconds. No transfer application, no new card.

The limitation worth knowing: ONORC carries your central NFSA entitlement, not state-specific extras. Additional grain or items given by your home state stay behind when you collect elsewhere.

If a dealer claims ONORC does not work at their shop, it is almost always reluctance rather than a technical block. Ask them to run the portability option on the ePoS machine, then call 1967 if they refuse.

Where Your Ration Card Unlocks Other Benefits

Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY
AAY and PHH households are typically eligible for โ‚น5 lakh cover. Check at pmjay.gov.in using your card number.
๐Ÿ
PM Awas Yojana

๐ŸŽ’
RTE school admission
Schools accept it as proof of family income and composition for reserved quota seats.
๐Ÿชช
Address and family proof
Accepted for Aadhaar updates, bank accounts, SIM cards and passport applications.
๐ŸŽ“
Scholarships and state schemes
Many state welfare applications ask for the card as the income and household reference.

๐Ÿ“ขComplaints: Where to Go When the Shop Says No

The national NFSA helpline is 1967, and every state runs its own toll-free line alongside it. Complaints can also be filed through the grievance section on nfsa.gov.in.

Report dealers who demand cash for free grain, give short weight, refuse ONORC collection, or claim stock is unavailable without showing the register.

For application delays, most states run Public Service Guarantee Acts with a defined issue timeline. Beyond that, escalate to the District Supply Officer or the state food commission.

Note the date, shop name and what happened before you call. Complaints with specifics get resolved; vague ones get closed.

State helplines run alongside 1967: UP 1800-180-0150, Bihar 1800-3456-194, Delhi 1800-110-841, Maharashtra 1800-222-950, Tamil Nadu 1800-425-5901. Numbers change occasionally, so cross-check on your state food portal.

2028

Free grain is guaranteed till December

The Cabinet extended PMGKAY for five years from January 2024. Until then, no NFSA cardholder should pay for their monthly wheat or rice.

๐Ÿ“…The Annual Check Worth Ten Minutes

Once a year, open your record on nfsa.gov.in or your state portal and read it properly. Confirm every member is listed, everyone shows verified, the address is current and the category is right.

Also confirm you are actually collecting each month. Several states delete cards that go uncollected for six months or more, and restoration is slower than prevention.

An outdated card quietly costs more than grain. It affects PM-JAY eligibility, housing scheme verification and school admissions that all read the same record.

Do it in March if you want a fixed habit, since that is when many states run verification drives and finish their financial-year cleanups. Catching a problem then means fixing it before the next drive flags you.

The grain is free till 2028. The only thing standing between your family and it is an e-KYC nobody told you about.

๐ŸงณMigrants: Getting This Right Before You Move

Do not surrender or cancel your home-state card when you move for work. Under ONORC that card is what gives you grain in the new city, and cancelling it leaves you with nothing until a fresh application clears.

Complete e-KYC for every member before leaving, including those staying behind, because an unauthenticated member is paused regardless of who is where.

Install Mera Ration 2.0 before travelling and use it to find shops near your new workplace. Collection can be split: family at home draws their share there while you draw yours where you are.

Only apply for a new card in the destination state if you have genuinely relocated permanently, and remove yourself from the old card first to avoid a duplicate flag.

One more practical point: keep a photo of the card and the member list on your phone. Dealers occasionally ask for the physical card, and a clear image plus Aadhaar usually settles it.
